PERIODONTICS

Unfortunately, normal daily oral hygiene is often insufficient or inadequate and causes inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). This increases the risk of periodontal illness.

Periodontics

Just imagine that your hands bleed every time you wash them. Wouldn’t you be worried? Many people think it is perfectly normal for gums to bleed when they clean their teeth, but swollen gums are in fact an initial sign of a bacterial infection. Don’t wait too long to have them treated. They can cause secondary disorders throughout your entire health system.

The White Lux International dental practice is an absolute specialist for periodontal treatments due to the long-term experience of the entire team and its daily dealings with even the most difficult of cases. We have been able to help many patients who came to us with serious periodontal diseases to get back to healthy and stable oral hygiene with our systematic work.

1. What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the periodontium.
Periodontitis occurs when the gums are so highly inflamed that gingival pockets form and gum recession and bone atrophy are a threat. The consequences of not seeking treatment are serious – you may lose teeth as a result.

2. How does periodontal disease occur?

Periodontal diseases are caused by bacteria in dental plaque. Plaque is a sticky, colourless substance with forms constantly, caused by food, liquids and saliva. If bacterial plaque is not removed it can attack gums and cause inflammation. If gingivitis is not treated it can lead to periodontitis which can cause atrophying of bones and gums. Massive consequential damage such as loss of teeth are possible in the advanced stages of periodontosis.

3. What are the consequences if I don’t have my periodontal disease treated?

Many people do not know that there are connections between periodontal disease and heart disease. It can cause deterioration in patients with existing heart conditions.

To name but a few:

Periodontal diseases increase the risk of strokes which are caused by blocked arteries.
For expectant mothers, it can cause premature birth.
Diabetics should take special care. Bacterial infections can cause difficulties with controlling the blood sugar level.
Inflammation can cause lung infections.

Bacterial infections around the periodontium can cause the gums to recede. This means there is a risk of bone atrophy and ultimately the loss of the tooth which has to be compensated for with an implant.

4. Surgical measures

Surgical interventions take place under local anaesthetic. This helps to make your treatment pain-free and comfortable. Our dentist separates the gum from the tooth by raising or folding the gum like a flap. This gives our dentist direct access to the roots and bones. The inflamed tissue is carefully cleaned from the bone. The tooth root is then smoothed and plaque and bacterial deposits are removed. In case of a bone defect, this is reconstructed with the aid of replacement materials. Finally, the gum is put back in place and held in place with thin stitches. The stitches are removed by our dentist after approximately one week.

5. Is periodontal treatment painful?

White Lux International Dental Practice places great emphasis on treatment being as pain-free as possible. Our entire team specialises in performing all treatments with the utmost precision, perfection and sensitivity. A local anaesthetic can be used with patients who are sensitive to pain. All surgical interventions are performed with local anaesthetic.
